    Edna M. Carrillo

Edna Moreno Carrillo was one of Houston’s most innovative educators. During her long, distinguished career, she initiated many programs to meet the needs of students as well as parents in the community.

Edna began teaching in HISD schools. She taught at Port Houston Elementary School from 1956 to 1960. She later transferred to Will Rogers Elementary School, where she taught sixth grade and served as a teaching assistant and part-time principal. While at Will Rogers she became one of the first to be trained in implementing the open concept model in the classroom.

Mrs. Carrillo was principal at Franklin Elementary School in 1972 and served with distinction until her death three years later. While at Franklin she started a program to teach parents how to read and write. She would meet with them on a voluntary basis.
Mrs. Carrillo believed that this was a way of helping her students, because once the parents learned how to read and write, they then would be able to help their children. She wanted her students to progress at the rate of other ethnic groups.

Mrs. Carrillo left a rich legacy of devotion to the cause of learning, which will live on at the school named in her memory.
