Phase I: Lottery – Parents rank options and apply. HISD runs a lottery to determine which students get a seat. Students who do not receive a seat are waitlisted at all schools they ranked higher than the seat they were offered.

Phase II: Space Available - Parents may add themselves to existing waitlists established during Phase I or enroll directly in campuses with space available.  Current HISD students can no longer apply once this phase closes.

Students may still be offered a seat at a campus if space opens up until the end of Phase 2. At the end of this phase, waitlists are retired.

Westside High School is a visionary high school with diverse programming that individualizes the student’s educational experience.  It is one of a handful of HISD high schools offering 2 separate magnet programs. The S.T.E.A.M. Magnet program offers students the opportunity to pursue their interest in one of the following fields: Audio Video Production, Business, Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Health Science, or Legal Studies. The Futures Academy of Health Science Magnet program offers a student the opportunity to earn a high school diploma AND 60 college credit hours. Students who have the desire to get a head start on their career by taking college classes in high school, earning an Associate's degree, and ultimately attending a four-year university, should definitely apply for the Futures Academy of Health Science magnet program.
