I am originally from Southern California, but moved to Houston to be closer to family. I started my teaching career as a high school social studies teacher at Westbury High School. I taught everything from World Geography to Advanced Placement U.S. History, Government, and Psychology. In 2011 I decided to take the leap to school administration and became a Magnet Coordinator and then Assistant Principal at Roberts Elementary School. In 2012 I became the Principal of Kolter Elementary and remained there until moving to Pershing in May of 2016. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from California Baptist University. I attended the University of Houston (Go Coogs!) where I received my Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Secondary Education and my Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction – Teaching.

I am very excited to be a member of the Pershing family. I am a native Houstonian, who is a PROUD graduate of Houston Independent School District. I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with an undergraduate degree in Radio/TV and Journalism. I received my masters degree in Educational Leadership from Lamar University. I also had the opportunity to live and teach in Yokosuka, Japan, and it was a very rewarding experience. I have been an educator for 10 years, and five of those years have been spent in Houston Independent School District. Throughout my career, I have taught both elementary and middle school English/Language Arts. I strongly believe in open communication from home to school and from school to home. I am looking forward to building relationships with Pershing parents and students while also fostering a love of learning and community. When I am not at school, my hobbies include reading and crafting. I also love to spend time with my family, which includes my sweet daughters Margeaux and McKenzie.

This is my sixth year with the Houston Independent School district. I was born and raised in McAllen, Texas and moved to Houston in 2015 to begin my teaching career. I have taught 7th and 8th grade science as well as STEAM and STEM enrichment summer camps. I’ve also collaborated with Rice University and participated in the Conoco Phillips Applied Mathematics Program. I received my Masters in Educational Leadership from the from the UT Arlington and my B.S. in Biology with a minor in English from The University of Texas Pan American. My philosophy is that all students can learn if provided with the necessary tools, integration of technology, and personalized instruction that they require in order to be successful. As educators it is in our hands to create a dynamic collaboration between the students and teachers to cultivate meaningful and successful learning experiences. I look forward to my second year as a Pershing Panda.

Carrie Curtis, Assistant Principal, 6th Gradecurtis.jpg

My name is Carrie Curtis, and this will be my 9th year with the Houston Independent School District, and 20th year in education! I started my teaching career as an All-level Art teacher; but my passion for all things literacy brought me to the classroom as a 1st grade and then 5th grade teacher. Throughout my career, I’ve also worked as an Instructional Technologist, Career Pathways Leader, and a SMART certified teacher—working with teachers across the state to effectively implement educational technology in their classrooms. I earned my Bachelors of Interdisciplinary Studies from Stephen F. Austin State University (Axe ‘Em Jacks) in Nacogdoches, TX—with minors in both Art and Reading. I received my Masters from the University of Texas at Arlington in Educational Leadership. My goal is to help students reach their fullest potential, and work with the teachers and parents to ensure a safe and positive campus environment. I look forward to my first year as a Pershing Panda!

Alberto Fernandez, 8th Grade Assistant Principal, (Last Names L-Z)fernandez.jpg

As a school administrator with over twenty-three years of educational and leadership experience, I believe that every person in our learning community should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. With that philosophy in mind, I devote myself to establishing a culture that embraces innovative ideas that will have a direct impact on all our children to attain an excellent education, contributing to meaningful and positive change in their lives. My administrative experience includes campus principal at Discovery Middle School and Bonham Elementary. I have also served as dean of students and assistant principal at the high school and middle school levels at great campuses such as Pearland High School, Westside High School, and Pin Oak Middle School. I am very excited about joining the Pershing team and returning to the Houston ISD, where I served with great enthusiasm for 19 years.

Amy Ford, 8th Grade Assistant Principal, (Last Names A-K)amy.jpg

My name is Amy Ford and this will be my 6th year with the Houston Independent School District. I started my teaching career in Tennessee (Go Volunteers!) as a 7th grade Science teacher. I love all things Science! During my teaching career, I worked with programs such as Vanderbilt Students Volunteer for Science, University of Tennessee S.T.E.M for Teachers , and Project Based Learning Curriculum. I moved to Houston in 2015 where I continued to be a Science teacher and grew into an administrative role as an Instructional Specialist. I believe that all students can learn when given an opportunity to engage in their own learning through innovative lessons and integrated technology. Always feel free to reach out at any point throughout the school year. I look forward to a successful 3rd year as a Pershing Panda!

Hope Goodson-Richardson, Dean of Instructionhope.jpg

This I believe… my first avenue after college was not education but somehow after being influenced by my grandparents as life-long educators I became one of them. I believe this is where I belong; teaching, mentoring, leading students and teachers in a middle school. I enjoy the challenges in working with middle school students and we serve as the best role models in society. Collectively from both Elementary and Middle School level, I have twenty plus years in education and most of those years were spent at Pershing as a teacher, Assistant Principal and Dean of Instruction.

Maria Jackson, Assistant Principal, 7th Gradegarrett.jpg

I am elated to serve as the 7th grade Assistant Prinicpal at Pershing Middle School. I have wholeheartedly served HISD middle and high school students for nine years, seven while being a teacher and campus leader and two as a Dean of Students, at Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan Middle School and Challenge Early College High School. Before joining HISD, I served as a teacher and campus leader at Harmony School of Science Sugarland High School. During these years in Education, I have had the joy and opportunity of forming sound and lasting relationships with faculty, staff, students, and parents, which I will continue doing so at Pershing. Finding a joy in writing poetry, close reading, and analyzing literature, I decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English at University of Houston - Downtown. I desired to further refine these skills by attaining a Master of Arts in English at Lamar University (LU). Eventually, I developed a passion for educational leadership in Urban Schools program at Rice University. I believe in servant and transformational leadership primarily because I desire to honor the knowledge, skills, and abilities of students and teachers. If needed, I will diligently work to create a trusting and conducive environment and pathway that will hopefully lead to the most dynamic and authentic educational experiences for students created by all willing stakeholders.
