• Gifted and Talented at Red 2022-2023

Our Gifted and Talented (GT) Program

At Red, we are a Neighborhood Vanguard Gifted & Talented Program. The Gifted and Talented (GT) Plan at Red Elementary endeavors to meet the needs of our gifted learners. The Houston Independent School District utilizes the Depth and Complexity icons and dimensions based on the work of Sandra Kaplan. Our teachers are required to have the initial 30 hours of Foundational Training and an annual 6-hour update.

Teachers are primarily responsible for accelerating and/or extending the classroom learning for gifted students. The STEM/Specialists teams also support teachers. Classroom teachers can utilize a variety of resources in planning and executing GT lessons. Additionally, all GT identified students are expected to complete a Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) each year. More information about the TPSP will be provided by your child’s teacher; you can also learn more about TPSPs on the web (www.texaspsp.org).

    Applying for GT identification

For current Kindergarten students attending Red - HISD uses universal testing in Kindergarten. All Kindergartners not already identified as GT will be tested. The only action required from parents is if you do NOT want your student tested. In that case, you must send a note to the child’s teacher indicating you do not want your students tested for GT identification.

For current students in 1st - 5th grade attending Red - the request for GT identification testing is made online through HISD ParentConnect. Click Here for a step-by-step guide to making the request online. Once the application is complete, you must email Mr. Uzick (Ruzick@houstonisd.org) so he can finalize the request. The deadline to submit requests for testing is Thursday February 2, 2023! No late applications can be accepted!

For non-enrolled students (K-5) living in the Red attendance zone - Email Mr. Uzick (ruzick@houstonisd.org) your request to have your student tested. You will receive a paper application via email. You will need to:

    1. Come to school and enroll (non attending). Be sure to bring Proof of birth, Social Security Card, immunization record, parent driver license, and proof of residency.

    2. fill out the application and email back to Mr. Uzick

    3.  submit a teacher recommendation form filled out by the child’s current teacher,

    4. submit the student’s most recent report card

When the above steps are complete, a test can be ordered. The deadline to submit requests for testing is Thursday February 2, 2023! No late applications can be accepted! Please do not wait until the last minute, the process can take a few days.
