Gifted and Talented at Red 2024-2025
Our Gifted and Talented (GT) Program
At Red, we are a Neighborhood Vanguard Gifted & Talented Program. The Gifted and Talented (GT) Plan at Red Elementary endeavors to meet the needs of our gifted learners. The Houston Independent School District utilizes the Depth and Complexity icons and dimensions based on the work of Sandra Kaplan. Our teachers are required to have the initial 30 hours of Foundational Training and an annual 6-hour update.
Teachers are primarily responsible for accelerating and/or extending classroom learning for gifted students. The STEM/Specialists teams also support teachers. Classroom teachers can utilize a variety of resources in planning and executing GT lessons. Additionally, all GT identified students are expected to complete a GT project during the year. Your classroom teacher will send more information about GT projects.
Applying for GT identification
For current second grade students attending Red - This school year, HISD will test all second graders not already identified as GT. The only action required from parents is if you do NOT want your student tested. In that case, you must send a note to the child’s teacher indicating you do not want your students tested for GT identification. Upcoming tests will be communicated to parents before testing occurs.
