What to Expect for Gifted and Talented Neighborhood Entering Kindergarten Testing

Students are administered two nationally normed tests: an achievement test and an abilities test appropriate for young children. An achievement test typically measures “school-type knowledge” such as reading, math, science, and social studies. An abilities test may measure problem-solving, sequencing, memory, and reasoning to gauge the student’s learning potential.

Both tests are administered on the same day during an approximate one-hour window in a face-to-face setting. They are administered one-on-one, and the test proctor records the child’s answers.

The test proctors are all certified teachers who have been carefully screened and trained in test administration. Because test administration moves at the child's pace, testing time will vary depending on each child.

Your child’s test results, Identification Matrix, and the letter notifying you of your child’s GT status will be mailed by the end of May 2024.

Once the test has been administered, children will not be allowed to retest for any reason. According to HISD Board policy, applicants may be assessed only once a school year and eligible for assessment the following school year.
