Transportation Services provides students with safe, reliable transportation to and from school, educational field trips, athletic competitions, and other events. The department has roughly 1,100 buses and more than 1,400 employees, including professional bus drivers equipped with commercial driver's licenses and dedicated support staff. On average, the HISD bus fleet travels more than 86,000 miles per day — or about 15 million miles annually — transporting roughly 36,000 students to and from school daily.

 
Nutrition Services staff serve more than 269,000 student meals daily and has the largest Breakfast in the Classroom program in the country. Each year, staff prepare and serve more than 20 million breakfast meals and 24 million lunch meals to the district's 197,000 students. The department operates the National School Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, and Child and Adult Care Feeding programs and is governed by guidelines and policies outlined by the United States and Texas departments of agriculture
 
 
Construction Services oversees new construction and major renovations at all HISD facilities, including implementation of the 2012 Bond program. The $2.1 billion program —the largest in the state and one of the largest in the country — calls for the rebuilding or replacement of more than 40 schools while placing a strong emphasis on transformational 21st century learning. Additional services provided by the department include logistics and moving support, furniture procurement, school safety planning, and sustainable design guidance.
 
 
 Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations maintain 30 million square feet of facility space in more than 300 buildings spanning more than 300 square miles. The department employs more than 2,000 employees with specialized knowledge in a variety of industries and crafts, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, structural, roofing, environmental services, hazardous materials, and automated controls, as well as energy management and sustainability, facilities finance, custodial operations, grounds support, security maintenance, code compliance, facilities rentals, and fleet maintenance.
 
 
 The Business Logistics and Purchasing Services department consists of the following divisions within Houston ISD: Business Solutions (Supplier Diversity and Risk Management), Logistics (Warehouse Operations, Inventory Control, Furniture Services, and Instructional Materials), and Purchasing Services. Each of these divisions focuses substantially on the services offered to all stakeholders of the Houston Independent School District; services which include business guidance and mentoring, M/WBE review and compliance, safety, health and insurance guidance and compliance, material supply, distribution and storage, textbook compliance, distribution, and equipment handling.
