SDMC Minutes 12.17
Attendees: Ruth Ruiz, Ericka Cardiel, Karla Garcia, Jonathan Guzman, Nicholas Hill, Floyd Mayne, Andre Rodriguez, Rowena Verdin
- Welcome and Introductions: Ms. Ruiz commenced the Microsoft Teams meeting at 3:40 PM. Participants introduced themselves.
- Safety Updates:
Ms. Ruiz discussed policies and procedures Milby follows for safety of all students and staff. PPE and other cleaning supplies are provided; extras purchased for schools who need help providing for their staff.
Ms Ruiz noted that there are 3 cases of Covid; however, building is cleaned constantly, throughout the school day by a dedicated cleaning crew brought in.
Mr. Mayne noted that he sees them doing a great job and constantly wipes down all surfaces.
Additionally, Ms. Ruiz also mentioned that building is cleaned nightly with electrostatic foggers that ensures the school building is disinfected.
- School Updates:
Ms. Ruiz stated that starting in January 2021, TEA will require any student who is failing to report on campus for face to face instruction.
Mr Mayne expressed concern that students in face to face classes feel isolated and believes that having more students face to face will benefit students. A reminder to observe health and safety protocols once more students are on campus.
Mr Hill agreed that students learn better in person.
Mr Rodriguez thinks it will incentivize students to work harder to avoid getting failing grades.

Nurse shared tips and suggestions to keep safe during holidays and travel.
- Other items
Mr Mayne shared a proposal to ask students to complete a flexible, service project to engage students.
Ms Garcia asked if this would be similar to PBLs; Mr Mayne confirmed.
Mr. Rodriguez asked if it was possible to hold special instructional sessions for parents so they will learn how to use the parent Connect app and have a way to monitor their student’s progress/grades.
Ms. Verdin suggested that instructional videos be made and posted on the website.
Mr. Guzman shared that within his department, clerks are calling parents to remind them about grades and attendance.
Ms. Garcia added that Ms Peralta also calls parents of students with excessive absences. When parents sign up for the app, they are shown how to set up notifications/alerts for attendance and grades.
Mr. Hill made request for Special education teachers to have access to Power school. This will help them know when students need help. Ms. Ruiz advised Mr Hill and other special education teachers to complete Security Form and submit to Ms DeLa Garza to submit to district for approval.
