Welcome! ¡Bienvenidos! Bienvenue! 你好 Nǐ hǎo

Departmental classes serve as an excellent bridge to middle school. Fifth graders attend three rigorous academic classes each day: math, science, and language arts/social studies.

Through a novel-based reading program, students improve their reading fluency. Historical fiction novels link reading to the history of the United States of America. Vocabulary Workshop, speeches, dramatizations, field trips, and current events help fifth graders gain the experiences they will need for middle school.

Problem-solving is always the focus in the fifth grade math class. Multiple strategies are taught so that students will learn to have “flexible” thinking and approach problem-solving from many different perspectives. Unit pretests, centers, small group tutorials, and integrated technology help to meet the needs of students working at different levels within the classroom.

The science classes are lab-based, focusing on all aspects of the experimental process; keen observations and analysis are stressed continually. Kolter’s gardens and pond allow students to experience “outdoor” hands-on science. Technology is incorporated into data collection and presentation. Reading scientific articles, writing essays, creating technology rich presentations, and individual research help the students gain a scientific understanding and appreciation of their world. Fifth grade teaches team work and provides the opportunity for increased responsibilities and independence.
