DISTRICT III FINE ARTS INITIATIVE IN THE CHAVEZ FEEDER PATTERN

The District III Fine Arts Initiative headed by the late Trustee Manuel Rodríguez, Jr., was conceptualized in the 2016-2017 academic year in the Chavez High School Feeder Pattern with plans to extend it throughout District III.

The initiative is a collaborative effort by schools located in Houston’s east side to create a vertical alignment of fine arts programs across school levels – elementary, middle, and high school. The initiative was designed to provide students with fine arts programs (1) of their choice, (2) with continuity, and (3) in their neighborhood schools. This collaboration offers growth through continuity as it nurtures student skills and talents throughout their school years.  

Schools participating in the Fine Arts Initiative include Bonner Elementary School, Lewis Elementary School, Park Place Elementary School, Patterson Elementary School, Rucker Elementary School, Ortiz Middle School, Stevenson Middle School, and Chavez High School.

For many years, schools in the east side of town suffered from a lack of support and resources to effectively promote the fine arts. This is changing now, thanks to the efforts of all the principals in the area and the continued support of local arts organizations. The District III Fine Arts Initiative is led by Dr. Sabrina Nguyen, Fine Arts Specialist.
