Introduction:
Welcome to my classroom! I have been teaching since 2011. I hold a Bachelor of Science from University of Texas at San Antonio Honors College with a degree in molecular genetics. I also have a Masters in STEM Curriculum and Policy Advocacy. I will work hard to foster the life skills of asking questions, finding alternative avenues to solve problems, never giving up, and academic independence as we master content.

Welcome to Anatomy & Physiology!
"HUMAN ANATOMY" by Ivan Pawluk is licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0
Course Description
Anatomy & Physiology serves as a fourth-year science course that introduces students to the intricacies of the human body in health and disease. This introduction course allows for the application of basic science concepts and facilitates the development and enhancement of problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
A & P provides a hands-on, laboratory-based class where you will study major systems of the body, health, nutrition, disease, and explore career opportunities in health care. As part of this course, you will be responsible for creating and teaching a two-day lesson plan for your assigned body system to the class. Essentially, you become the expert in at least one body system. You will also complete several smaller individual projects related to the anatomy and physiology throughout the year.
A&P is an elective, meaning you CHOSE to take this course. I expect a high level of interest and participation as I assume you are genuinely here to learn about the human body and its capabilities. Additionally, this course is about human anatomy and physiology. Some topics, pictures, videos, and diagrams may be considered sensitive and/or graphic. You are expected to act maturely in dealing with such material.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- describe and apply anatomical terminology;
- distinguish and describe major tissue types;
- describe the structure and function of the major organ systems and their interaction with each other; and
- define homeostasis and describe specific examples for each of the major organ systems.
Supplies
- Your HISD laptop, fully charged
- Writing materials (pencils and pens)
- Medical gloves for dissections
- Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach ISBN: 978-0393324822
Grading Policy
- Major Assignments will have a multiplier on them – Unit exams, Quizzes, Labs, Projects
- Minor Assignments will count for one grade – Minor Labs, Demos, Homework, in-class work and all other uncategorized items
**All assignments and grades are cumulative
It is vital that you follow instructions for properly submitting your work to receive full credit. Houston ISD emphasizes not only the TEKS but also the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards (TCCRS). These standards are based on cognitive skills that will increase students’ college preparedness.

Student Responsibilities and Classroom Procedures (Class Culture) for in-person instruction
- Come to class on time, prepared and ready to work. If you are delayed elsewhere within campus, you will need to secure a legible written pass to be admitted. The pass is only for admittance purposes.
- Food, drink, gum/candy, cell phones, earbuds, music/video/game players and other such non-school related items are not permitted. Items confiscated multiple times will be returned to you only through your parent/guardian.
- Leave the room as clean or cleaner than you found it.
- Attend to your personal needs before coming to class. You will be allowed to leave class only in an emergency. An emergency in A&P is defined as: hemorrhaging, severe hypohydration, or emesis.
- Stay on task.
- Academic Integrity: Cheating, copying, and plagiarizing will not be tolerated in this course. Any student displaying academic dishonesty will be reported and referred to the Assistant Principal. The student will receive grade of “0” on the assignment and there will not be an opportunity to make up the assignment. This includes exams and quizzes. Any disruptions, intentional or unintentional, during a test or quiz will be perceived as a violation of academic integrity in the classroom and will be reported.
- Safety first! Violations of safety rules will result in a maximum grade of 70. Depending on the severity of the offense, you may be removed from the activity and earn a grade of “0” for that particular activity.
- Always write your first and last name, full date, and class period to get credit for all work you turn in.
- Write neatly and legibly. I will grade only what I can read!
- Not everything we do will be for a grade. Some things are just to help you improve in A&P.
Consequences: Any/all of steps 1-3 may be skipped; dependent on the severity of the incident.
1) Verbal warning.
2) Personal conference with teacher and parents/guardians are contacted.
3) Parent/teacher/student conference.
4) Referral to Administration.
Headings: All hardcopy papers submitted must include the following information:
Full Name (first AND last name without initials or abbreviations)
Class and Period (example: Bio P4)
Date of submission
Assignment Calendar:
A calendar outlining the entire year will be posted in the class Canvas. Every test, quiz, project, homework assignment, lab, activity, and field trip will be posted on this calendar. You will know at the beginning of the cycle all assignment deadlines and schedules for the organ systems. You are expected to look at this regularly to check for any changes and/or updates!
Labs: When you are involved in a lab, you MUST act accordingly. Participating in lab is a privilege, one that can be taken away if the proper procedures are not followed. If you do not follow the rules of the lab then you will not be allowed to participate and will receive a zero for that lab as well as a zero for your lab skills grade. In order to participate in lab you must make at least an 80% on the safety test and turn in a signed safety contract.
Absences: You are expected to attend class every day. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to promptly gather the assignments that you missed. I will not remind you of missed assignments, you must take the initiative to find out what you missed. If you miss a test or quiz YOU must schedule a make-up, but keep in mind that the format of the retest is at the teacher’s discretion. It is your responsibility to reschedule your missed test in a timely manner. Any assignments not made up from an absence will result in a zero. Please do not disturb the teacher during class to get missed assignments, wait for a quiet time or come by outside of class time.
Late Work/Missing Assignments: All assignments are due ON TIME. Late homework will be accepted up to one day late and no later. Maximum score for late homework submitted is 70% for one day late and 0% thereafter. If you are on campus the day an assignment is due, you are required to turn it in, even if you miss your class period. Being away from school for any school-related activity does not excuse you from turning in any due assignment at assigned times without prior approval. In-Class assignments are not eligible for late policy.
Tutorials: I am available to help you better understand information in a small group or individually. Tutoring is available by appointment at lunch and during SSEP. The National Honor Society also offers peer tutoring. If you are having difficulty in this class ask for help early!
Extra Credit: I do not offer extra credit.
Cell Phones: Cell phones are not permitted for use in class unless directed by the teacher. All cell phones and earbuds should be put away before class starts and on silent or off. Students caught with a cell phone will have their phone taken up for the remainder of class. A second violation and the phone will be given to the Assistant Principal. A parent must then come to pick up the phone and will be charged $15 for recovery.
Assignment Resubmission: Resubmissions are permitted at my discretion and will only be considered if the original assignment was submitted on time.
Retakes: The policy for my class is outlined below. Please review it carefully.
- Maximum of 2 retakes per grading cycle
- Maximum retake score is 70 (score of 70 to 100 = 70); highest grade between original/retake counted
- The student, not the parent, must request the retake.
- Student must request the retake within 24 hours of the grade posting in PowerSchool and complete the retake within one week of grade posted.
- Retakes are for tests only. A reading quiz is an extension of homework and not eligible.
- If you have multiple retakes on the same day, it is your responsibility to reschedule in advance.
- “No show” counts as a taken retake. You will be considered a “no show” if you arrive 15 minutes or later from the start of your scheduled retake time.
- Final Exams are not eligible
- Missing assignments fall under my late policy not the retake policy.
Academic Integrity: Cheating, copying, and plagiarizing will not be tolerated at CVHS.
