Good Things Are Happening At Helms!

    October 29, 2014

    Dear Parents:

It is hard to believe that we are completing the first 9 weeks of school. Report cards will be going home this Friday to students in K through 5. PK report cards are on a 12 week cycle and will go home on November 14th.  We will also have an award assembly for the first 9 weeks on November 14th at 8:30 in our cafeteria where we will recognize Perfect Attendance, All A and All A and one B Honor Rolls, and Top Accelerated Readers for each grade. We will send more information about this as we get closer to the date. I hope you can join us for this.

On November 8, the HISD Department of Family and Community Engagement will present the HISD Family Learning Academy at Reagan High School from 9:00 to 1:30. There will be workshops for families on topics such as college and career readiness, family wellness, family leadership, and learning at home.  Child care will be provided on a first come first served basis.

Our SPARK Park will be rededicated on Monday, November 17 at 1:00 pm. Stay tuned for more details!

    Thank you,

    John Baker

    Estimados padres:

    Promotion Standards 2014-15

    Promotion Standards 2014-15

On August 14, 2014, the HISD Board of Education suspended local policy provisions relating to successful performance on the mathematics assessment as a condition of promotion for students in grades 3 through 8 for the 2014–15 school year only.

The 2014–15 school year will be the first year of implementation for the newly revised mathematics TEKS for kindergarten through grade 8. The Texas Education Agency has indicated that, due to the extensive nature of the changes in the mathematics TEKS for kindergarten through grade 8, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing program for students in grades 3–8 will be significantly affected by these changes. The spring 2015 STAAR mathematics assessment for students in grades 3–8 will involve a unique administration based on curriculum frameworks created with the revised TEKS. Because of this unique administration, only a raw score will be communicated to the district, retakes for mathematics for grades 5 and 8 will not be available, and the Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements for the mathematics STAAR will not apply. The SSI grade advancement requirements, however, will continue to apply for the STAAR reading assessment.

Passing standards will be set during the summer of 2015 for campus accountability and district purposes.

Revised Promotion Standards for 2014-15 are listed below:

    Grades 1 and 2

Students must pass High Frequency Word Test –Recognizing and reading words that appear very often in written and spoken languageState requirement of overall yearly average of 70 or above and local requirement of an average of 70 or above in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science or social studies.

    Grades 3, 4, and 5

Students in grades 3-5 must pass STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) in reading. The STAAR Math assessment will still be administrated; however STAAR Math results are NOT a promotion standard this year.

State requirement of overall yearly average of 70 or above and local requirement of an average of 70 or above in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science or social studies.

Additionally, all students must have sufficient attendance; a student’s total number of unexcused absences cannot exceed 10% of class meetings.

Upcoming report cards will include summary information of revised promotion standards.
