Last few weeks of the school year

Last few weeks of the school year

    Dear Parents:

I hope that everyone had a relaxing and restful Spring Break! The last few weeks of the school year can become quite hectic. Report cards go home this Friday and we have a holiday the next Friday, April 3rd.

4th and 5th grade students will take the first set of STAAR tests next week. 4th Grade will take the writing test on Monday and Tuesday and 5th grade will take the reading test on Tuesday. Please make sure that 4th and 5th grade students are on time and well rested so they can shine on those days. On STAAR testing days, parents will not be allowed to eat with students at lunch so that we can maintain the testing environment.

On May 16, we will have our first International Festival from 11 to 1. The International Festival will be an opportunity for members of our school community who are from other places to share their country with everyone else. Members of our staff are setting up booths to show off their home countries. If you would like to set up a booth for your country, where you can let your country shine with a flag, food, music, or pictures, please contact Ms. Aluotto at the school. If you know a group that would like to perform to share dances, songs, or music from another country, please contact Ms. Aluotto as well.

I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate our Teacher of the Year, Ms. Jerrols, and our Bilingual Teacher of the Year, Ms. Marcelo. These hard working teachers were selected by their peers to represent Helms as the Teachers of the Year. We are so proud of them!

    Sincerely,

    John Baker
    Principal
    Helms Elementary

Las últimas semanas del año escolar

    Estimados padres:

    Atentamente,

    John Baker
    Director

HISD moving forward with plan to identify G/T kindergarten students

Last update / Actualización: 02/27/2015  ||  Photo: Juanma Cantos

HISD moving forward with plan to identify G/T kindergarten students

HISD’s work to identify gifted and talented (G/T) kindergarten students will be completed on schedule, now that a testing company has addressed the district’s concerns about the credibility of one of the exams used in the G/T identification process.

HISD administrators began reviewing the G/T identification process earlier this month after being informed by the testing company of an anomaly in the scoring of the kindergarten Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The test — which places students on a national scale and shows how they compare with their peers across the country — is one of several factors used to identify students for HISD’s G/T Program. Other factors include report cards, teacher recommendations, and performance on the Cognitive Abilities Test.

Read more about it at HISD's website CLICKING HERE.

Or CLICK HERE to read (PDF format) the letter to parents by Dan Gohl, Chief Academic Officer, that explains the district’s solution in regard to the anomaly found in the scoring of the kindergarten Iowa exam for English students and the Logramos exam for Spanish students which resulted in non-credible G/T rankings.

    Promotion Standards 2014-15

Last update / Actualización: 09/12/2014  ||  Photo: Juanma Cantos

    Promotion Standards 2014-15

On August 14, 2014, the HISD Board of Education suspended local policy provisions relating to successful performance on the mathematics assessment as a condition of promotion for students in grades 3 through 8 for the 2014–15 school year only.

The 2014–15 school year will be the first year of implementation for the newly revised mathematics TEKS for kindergarten through grade 8. The Texas Education Agency has indicated that, due to the extensive nature of the changes in the mathematics TEKS for kindergarten through grade 8, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing program for students in grades 3–8 will be significantly affected by these changes. The spring 2015 STAAR mathematics assessment for students in grades 3–8 will involve a unique administration based on curriculum frameworks created with the revised TEKS. Because of this unique administration, only a raw score will be communicated to the district, retakes for mathematics for grades 5 and 8 will not be available, and the Student Success Initiative (SSI) grade advancement requirements for the mathematics STAAR will not apply. The SSI grade advancement requirements, however, will continue to apply for the STAAR reading assessment.

Passing standards will be set during the summer of 2015 for campus accountability and district purposes.

Revised Promotion Standards for 2014-15 are listed below:

    Grades 1 and 2

Students must pass High Frequency Word Test –Recognizing and reading words that appear very often in written and spoken languageState requirement of overall yearly average of 70 or above and local requirement of an average of 70 or above in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science or social studies.

    Grades 3, 4, and 5

Students in grades 3-5 must pass STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) in reading. The STAAR Math assessment will still be administrated; however STAAR Math results are NOT a promotion standard this year.

State requirement of overall yearly average of 70 or above and local requirement of an average of 70 or above in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science or social studies.

Additionally, all students must have sufficient attendance; a student’s total number of unexcused absences cannot exceed 10% of class meetings.

Upcoming report cards will include summary information of revised promotion standards.
