Pre-K Programs

In HISD, we offer Pre-K programs in three types of locations:

Elementary Campus-Based Zoned & Magnet

We have 159 elementary schools offering Pre-K through 5th grade with an average number of 2-3 Pre-K classrooms with English, ESL, Bilingual, or Dual Language programs.
We have 7 elementary schools with Pre-K magnet programs offering an average of 2-3 Pre-K classrooms with Dual Language or other specialty programs.

PRE-K PARTNERSHIPS

We have 3 elementary schools (Bush ES, Daily ES, and Piney Point ES) with a Pre-K Partnership program at a nearby childcare satellite location. These classrooms have the same high-quality programming as our HISD schools. Each classroom has a certified HISD teacher and students are dually enrolled with the childcare site and HISD to provide the maximum support for students and families.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTERS

An Early Childhood Center, also known as an ECC, offers Pre-K, Pre-K and Kinder, or Pre-K – 1^st grade and prepares children with the necessary intellectual and emotional building blocks to succeed in school and in life. An ECC provides a fun, caring, and supportive environment which enables them to develop their cognitive, emotional, and social abilities. ECCs’ are a suitable place for children to get a head start in their education and development so that they can be successful in the future.

Dual Language Information

All HISD campuses serving our Pre-K families who need services through a Bilingual Education Program will offer ESL or one of the following Bilingual Program models; transitional early-exit, transitional late-exit, one-way dual language, or two-way dual language. Dual Language, whether the one-way or two-way program model, is overall the most beneficial Bilingual Education Program for our students who are acquiring English.

The One-Way Dual Language program model is very similar to the transitional bilingual model, but the one-way model supports biliteracy by offering a balance of English and Spanish instruction while the transitional model focuses more on increasing English while decreasing Spanish.
The Two-Way Dual Language program model also supports biliteracy by offering a balance of instruction in English and the partner language (Spanish, Arabic, French, Mandarin) throughout the school year. This program model serves both native English speakers and English Learners in the same classroom so students are able to grow in their language and cultural proficiency with a language partner.
