HISD's Advanced Academics Department tests students in kindergarten through grade 11 who are applying to the district's Gifted and Talented (GT) program, potential GT students, and new students who lack appropriate achievement-test scores and are seeking grade placement. GT applicants are given the CogAT and (depending on their home language) either the Iowa or Lagromos Achievement Exam.
Please note the GT identification process varies depending on your child's current grade level. Each process is detailed below:
Current kindergarten & 5th grade students
HISD automatically tests kindergarten and 5th-grade students who are new to the district or who have not yet been identified as GT. This testing takes place in November and December, If your child qualifies, you will be notified by February.
Students absent during the exam will have an opportunity for make-up testing throughout December and January. These families will be notified of qualification by March.
Current 1st through 4th grade students
Students who are new to the district or who were not identified/qualified in kindergarten have an opportunity to apply for GT identification once per year. Students who complete the application will be tested throughout December and January, and parents will be notified of the results by March.
Applications can be downloaded here
or can be picked up at the front office. Completed applications are due by November 7 and can be dropped off at our front office, addressed to Rebekah Nielsen.
Students in pre-kindergarten or who have not yet begun kindergarten
Sinclair is one of the select HISD campuses that test entering Kindergarten students for the Gifted and Talented program. Students that qualify will enter kindergarten identified as GT students. Please use the link to the left to learn more about the process if your student will begin kindergarten next school year.
