Houston Heights author Anne Sloan wrote this Christmas story (2005) about growing up in the Heights in 1905. The story is illustrated by another Heights resident and artist Mary Grace Hamill. Sloan is best known for her book, “Murder on the Boulevard – A Houston Heights Mystery” (1998) and other works that include “The Apothecary’s Demise” (2000) and “Houston Heights” (2009) which is a brief history of our historic neighborhood. The Texas Education Agency has released their School Report Card for 2013-2014. This report is required by the Texas Legislature and it provides information concerning performance on the Texas Assessment of School Readiness (STAAR), as well as information on Student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures. The Harvard Parent Book Club will read “How Children Succeed” by Paul Tough. Why do some children succeed while others fail? Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character.
