                        (Spanish version)

Dear Parents, Students, and The Community of Westbury High School,

We are stepping into a “new normal” for learning.  The goal is that we all get through these difficult times and we continue to be cautious over the next several weeks. We all need to make wise decisions.  Listen to the advice and direction of our city and state leaders as they know what is best and what is happening city-wide. Also, it’s very important to listen to the news for updates from our very own Superintendent, Dr. Lathan.

What Do Our Students Need to do Right Now?

    • Students need to make sure they have their laptop or other device to access the internet. They need to be able to log into the HUB and access gradespeed.
    • Students should log into the HUB to ensure all assignments have been submitted for all classes.
    • Review your gradespeed account and complete all missing work for the Grading Cycle 5. All work for the 5th 6-weeks is due April 3rd. Again, check the HUB for the assignments.
    • The Westbury Staff has been diligently calling the entire student population. If you did not receive a call or were left a message, please visit the Westbury website or have your student log into the HUB and complete the Student Needs Survey.
    • We will start teaching and learning online Tuesday, March 31st. Monday, March 30th is a district holiday (Chavez-Hueta Day).
    • Please Practice good hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water frequently, use alcohol-based sanitizers when soap and water are not available. Use disposable tissues when coughing and sneezing. If tissues are not available, direct your cough or sneeze into the crook of your arm/sleeve. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

    Westbury’s Plan For @HOME Learning

    • Students will stay enrolled in the same courses they are in through the end of the school year.
    • Students have 7 periods on their schedule (some seniors who have off campus do not have 7 periods).
    • We will rotate the schedule so that classes meet every other day. There will be specific times for lessons and live chats with the classroom teachers.  Videos and information can be access by students at any time.
    • A chart of the class schedule will be posted on the website.
    • Your teachers will have daily “Live Chats”. See the schedule for the specific times.
    • Each Friday, teachers will expect all grades to be turned in for the week. The Friday schedule for teachers will be to complete grading for the week, reach out to students who have work to turn in (parents we need your help), and attend online department meetings.
    • Teachers will also be available on email all week (Monday-Friday). This is for students and parents to communicate and answer questions.
    • There are many online meetings, planning session, and support that teachers are involved in so please be patient when communicating.

The Following Are Current Cancellations and Closures:

    • Harris county is currently under “stay home, work safe order” until April 3rd.
    • Westbury high school building is officially closed starting Thursday, March 26th. The district has officially cancelled all events for March and April.  Please watch for updates as we move forward.
    • Decisions for May and June have not yet been made, including graduation in June.
    • Refunds – The District is working on a system for issuing refunds to families who paid fees and dues. Please be patient as we work through this issue.
    • STAAR has been cancelled for this school year. Graduating Seniors will be contacted by their AP’s if they have projects to do in place of any STAAR tests.
    • A.T. has been cancelled for the months of April and May.

Personally, I am truly missing contact with “my people.”  My people are the students!  I miss their smiles, hugs, laughs, complaints, naughty behavior, ideas, suggestions, and the joy they bring me!  It’s what I love!

I am praying that all of you take the advice we have been given from those leading and understand how very serious this pandemic truly is! Stay safe!
