HealthFund FAQs

  • If I currently have a HealthFund balance, what happens if HISD changes its medical carrier?

    Posted by:

The dollars in your HealthFund remain with HISD, not the medical carrier. The HealthFund dollars rolled over remain with HISD for you to use on covered healthcare expenses as long as you remain enrolled in a medical plan that includes a HealthFund.

Please note: Effective January 1, 2017, HISD no longer offers the HealthFund. You may continue to use any funds you have left over from previous years to pay for eligible expenses as long as you are enrolled in an HISD medical plan.

  • How does participating in a medical plan that includes a HealthFund affect my healthcare FSA?

    Posted by:

As a participant in a medical plan that includes a HealthFund, you can maximize your savings by using a health care FSA to pay expenses that aren’t covered by your medical plan such as coinsurance amounts. HealthFund dollars must be used first and then your FSA dollars are used.

Please note: Effective January 1, 2017, HISD no longer offers the HealthFund. You may continue to use any funds you have left over from previous years to pay for eligible expenses as long as you are enrolled in an HISD medical plan.

Pay your copay at the pharmacy and file a paper claim for reimbursement with Cigna using your pharmacy receipt. Cigna mails you a check if you have funds available.

  • What if my eligible expenses are more than the amount left in my HealthFund?

    Posted by:

If the provider enters a request for the entire expense and it’s more than you have in your HealthFund, Cigna pays the amount available, and the provider bills you for the rest. The provider also has the right to request any amounts not available in the HealthFund at the point of service or otherwise payable by the plan.

Please note: Effective January 1, 2017, HISD no longer offers the HealthFund. You may continue to use any funds you have left over from previous years to pay for eligible expenses as long as you are enrolled in an HISD medical plan.

  • What expenses can be paid from the HealthFund?

    Posted by:

All expenses eligible for coverage under the medical plan and pharmacy are payable from your HealthFund. But remember you also have the HISD-provided preventive care benefit that pays preventive care expenses such as costs for annual wellness exams at 100%.

Please note: Effective January 1, 2017, HISD no longer offers the HealthFund. You may continue to use any funds you have left over from previous years to pay for eligible expenses as long as you are enrolled in an HISD medical plan.

  • How do I use my HealthFund to pay for a doctor office visit?

    Posted by:

When you go to an in-network participating doctor:
1- Present your Cigna medical plan ID card.
2- Your provider should file your claim directly with Cigna for reimbursement.
3- The card provides a website and phone number to verify your HealthFund balance. If there’s money in your HealthFund, that provider bills Cigna and Cigna pays your provider directly from your HealthFund balance.

If you receive emergency care from an out-of-network provider, you may need to pay the bill and file a claim for reimbursement. Filing your medical claim accesses your HealthFund dollars, too.

Please note: Effective January 1, 2017, HISD no longer offers the HealthFund. You may continue to use any funds you have left over from previous years to pay for eligible expenses as long as you are enrolled in an HISD medical plan.

  • How do I access my HealthFund dollars?

Present your ID card to your provider each time you receive services. The card gives your provider a website and phone number for contacting Cigna to verify your HealthFund balance. Your provider bills Cigna for the services you receive, and, if there’s money in your HealthFund, Cigna pays your provider directly from your HealthFund balance. Pharmacy claims also can be paid from your HealthFund account; however, you must file a paper  claim form to receive reimbursement. Claim forms are available here.

Please note: Effective January 1, 2017, HISD no longer offers the HealthFund. You may continue to use any funds you have left over from previous years to pay for eligible expenses as long as you are enrolled in an HISD medical plan.
