Outside of annual enrollment, the only time you can change your benefits is when you experience a qualified life event.
- In most cases, you have up to 31 days from the date of your life event to make changes.
- You can update your beneficiaries any time.
- All life events must be validated as part of the Dependent Verification Services process.

If you die
What happens if you die
Your family’s coverage continues until the end of the month in which you die. To continue coverage beyond that date, your family can obtain health coverage through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). For more information, your family can call Benefits Service Center at 877-780-4473 . If your spouse is covered by the hospital indemnity, critical illness, cancer and specified diseases or accident plan, he or she can continue coverage on an individual basis after filling out a change in ownership form.
Survivor benefits
After your death, your life insurance is paid to your designated beneficiary as is supplemental life and AD&D. Your beneficiary should contact the HISD Benefits Service Center at 877-780-HISD (4473), choose a language then press 2 for more information. The Service Center is available weekdays (except holidays), 7 a.m. to 7 p.m CST. -
What to do if your child dies
Within 31 days of the death of your child, contact the HISD Benefits Service Center to change coverage for you, your spouse and/or your dependents. Call 877-780-HISD (4473), choose a language and then press 2 to get started. The Service Center is available weekdays (except holidays), 7 a.m. to 7 p.m CST. Your changes take effect the first day of the month after you notify the HISD Benefits Service Center.
