Yates High School offers two magnet programs, The School of Communications & The Maritime Academy.
The School of Communications is one of the oldest High School communications magnet programs in the State of Texas. Our Maritime Academy, in partnership with the Port of Houston, prepares students for careers in the industry of Maritime Logistics.

Every Thursday at 1PM, starting September 23rd through November 11th 2021, we will be hosting a special virtual event called MAGNET THURSDAYS via Microsoft Teams.
In this special session, you’ll get the opportunity to learn more about our Magnet Programs, and what opportunities our campus has to offer.
The School of Communications
The Jack Yates High Magnet School of Communications is home to one of the most robust High School Communication programs in the country. Our campus boasts a multimillion-dollar creative studio facility for TV, Film and Radio Production. Our campus also features a music recording lab with professional level vocal recording booths and master control.
Students in the School of Communication have the opportunity to participate in one of the following courses of study:
- Commercial Photography
- Digital Audio Technology, Radio Production
- Music Production & Entrepreneurship
- TV and Narrative Film Production
Students in the School of Communication will leave the school prepared to become leaders in the world of communication. Many of our alumni have gone on to work in media and earn prestigious awards.
The Maritime Academy
The Maritime Academy at Jack Yates prepares students for careers in the vibrant Maritime industry. In partnership with the Port of Houston, students get the opportunity to earn real world experience with a focus on Logistics.
Students can train and be certified to drive our campus forklift or have the chance to drive a ship through the Panama Canal with the assistance of our new immersive bridge simulator.
Students with a high interest in pursuing a career in Maritime Logistics can also take part in dual credit opportunities with our partner, Houston Community College. Students will take maritime course work that leads them to a Level I Professional Certificate in Logistics.
The application for Magnet for the 2022-2023 school year will open on September 10th, 2021.
Phase 1 applications close on November 11th 2021. We encourage you to apply early to secure your spot in your program of choice.
