About Attendance

    • Please note, that the excused notes are for daily attendance to mark absences as excused. This is to avoid truancy court.
    • As it relates to the 90% rule, students must be presented 90% of the time to be awarded credit, regardless of excused or unexcused. If a student passes and is not present 90% of the time the credit is denied.

Daily Attendance (To avoid truancy court)

    • Texas Education Code 25.085 Compulsory Attendance

      • We are required to take DAILY attendance once a day as it relates to Texas Education Code 25.085 Compulsory Attendance.
      • The parent/guardian commits an offense of criminal negligence under TEC 25.093 if a child has unexcused, voluntary absences for ten or more days or parts of days within a six-month period or three or more days or parts of days within a four-week period from school.
      • An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not to exceed $500. TEC 25.093, Family Code 51.03(b)(2), and Penal Code 12.233.
      • All excused Notes are due to our Campus Attendance Clerk, Ms. Lara,  within 3 school days of absence.
        • Excused notes must include date, date of absence(s), reason for absence, student name, parent name, parent contact number, and parent signature.

Attendance for each class period (to earn credit for each class)

    • Minimum Attendance for Class Credit or Final Grades  (AKA 90% Rule)

      • A student in any grade level from kindergarten through grade 12 shall not be given credit or a final grade for a class unless the student is in attendance 90 percent of the days the class is offered.
      • This means we are required to take attendance for each class.
      • In order to receive credit or a final grade for a class, a student is required to attend class 90 percent of the days class is offered regardless of whether the student’s absences are excused or unexcused.  Atty. Gen. Op. JC-0398 (2001)
      • All absences, excused and unexcused, are counted for the purpose of determining attendance for credit.

Attendance Appeal (asterisk removal)

    • If a student is not present 90% of the time, credit is denied and "NG" is posted to transcript (No Grade.)

      • All students who received asterisks for C4 and C5, received a letter stating there is a possibility they may need summer school for NG's.
        • This semester, we notified students in advance in an effort to be proactive to remove the asterisk BEFORE it is posted to transcript.
        • Although we may have collected some logs, we cannot enter them until the semester ends. This is why they are included on the potential summer school list.
      • Tracking of hours will be done for those who have turned in the attendance and students who will need summer school will receive notification Monday, June 1.
      • Please turn in any attendance hours by Wednesday, 12:00 pm.
