Mandarin Immersion

Magnet School

Welcome to MIMS! 欢迎来到休斯顿中国浸会学校!

  • Welcome to the homepage of the Mandarin Immersion Magnet School (MIMS) in Houston Independent School District! MIMS is located in Houston, Texas and serves the entire HISD community.
Mandarin Immersion Magnet School is a vibrant language immersion campus. Our students are diverse culturally, economically, and academically. In Pre-Kindergarten-5th grade, students typically spend half of the instructional day in a Mandarin class and the remaining half in an English class with native speakers in each language. This balanced approach employs rigorous academic standards in core subjects while developing biliteracy and bilingualism. In Middle School, all students take Pre-AP courses including accelerated Math and Science. In Grades 6-8, an Advanced Immersion track prepares 8th grade students to take the AP Chinese exam for college credit while 6th Grade students also join our campus at Middle School level for a Beginning Immersion Track.

Through rich cultural partnerships and special events, students also gain an awareness of and an appreciation for Chinese culture, traditions and practices that enhance their global citizenship. We welcome your questions and look forward to introducing you to our unique and exciting educational program!

    Health Reminders

I am frequently reminding our students about staying healthy.  The following are some of the morning announcement scripts that I read to the students.  I just want to share and keep you in the loop.

Students, throughout this week, what is the most talked about item in the morning announcement?  I’m giving you a quiz this morning.  Think for a second…  the answer is staying healthy.  I gave you tips about staying healthy.  Here is my quiz.  How often do we wash our hands?  Rarely, never, frequently?  1 second, yes, frequently, like all the time!  Why?  Because we want to make sure our hands are germ free.  Who wants germs on their hands??  No one~  Next quiz, if i need to sneeze or cough, what do i do?  Sneeze or cough openly in the air?  Sneeze or cough in my palms, sneeze or cough in my elbow or tissue paper?  1 second, when we sneeze or cough, we do it in our elbow or in a tissue paper.  Remember, wash your hands all the time!

Students, do you know the secret to staying healthy?  Do you know how to prevent spreading germs?  Here are some tips:

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Stay home when you are sick and remain home until fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
    • Did I say wash your hands often?

    Protect Instructional Time

Parents, please refrain from requesting the front office to call your child in the middle of a class.  Requests such as checking if your child has lunch money, whether your child brought gym cloth, whether your child brought homework, etc., are non-emergency and should not be a reason to stop teacher from teaching.  Our front office staff has been instructed to refrain from calling the classroom unless it is an emergency.

    Reserved Parking Spots

Parents, please be respectful of the reserved parking spots by not park your vehicle there.  Our teachers have reserved parking so that they don’t have to spend extra time finding parking spaces in the morning.  Our generous donors donated thousands of dollars to improve our school, to help us provide the highest quality education to our students.  We thank their generosity and show our appreciation by dedicating parking spaces for them.  Once again, please do not park your vehicle at any reserved parking spot.
