Audition Information

  • Band Audition Requirements

    The following information is an explanation of the Meyerland PVA Middle School Band Audition Process. The rubric below shows the necessary requirements to audition. The student will prepare the listed criteria below if he or she is an EXPERIENCED (1 year or more on the instrument) band student. Students should bring their own instrument and music to their scheduled audition.

    *Experienced Students are Expected to Prepare the Following:

    Description of Process

    *Scale(s) (and/or)  Percussion Rudiments

    *Concert Scale(s): Play one octave ascending & descending 

    *Chromatic Scale: Play one octave ascending & descending

    *Percussion Rudiments: double stroke, paradiddle, flams, ruffs … etc.

    *Prepared Piece -

    {Slower Tempo}

    *The student is required to perform a solo work of their choice to demonstrate their expressive command of the instrument. The student should choose a piece that they feel will effectively exhibit their musicianship. The piece should be at least 45 seconds or longer.

    *Prepared Piece -

    {Faster Tempo}

    *The student is required to perform a solo work of their choice to demonstrate their technical command of the instrument. The student should choose a piece that they feel will effectively exhibit their musicianship. The piece should be at least 45 seconds or longer.

    Scoring Criteria + Points:

    Scales/Rudiments=50 pts.

    Musicality/Sight Reading =100 pts.

    Prepared Piece #1=75 pts.

    Prepared Piece #2 = 75 pts.

    *A student is deemed a beginner and will follow the starting process if…

    *The student does not know how to read music.

    *The student has only played a band instrument for 6 months or less.

    *The student does not have an instrument to use.

    *Starting Process: Director(s) will use the student’s music aptitude score as their audition if a student falls in this category as well as the data from an interview form given by the director at the time of the scheduled audition.
