Houstonisd.org/eastSDMC is our campus SDMC website with minutes and agenda. SDMC begins the meeting at 3:45.
Members in attendance: Stephanie Square, Charles Walton, Carlos Marquina, Gwendolyn Pauloski, Megan Rodriguez, Fred Daniels, Rachelle Huff, Veronica Hernandez. Members not in attendance: Belinda Herrera, Karen Saenz, Melissa EliasSEL strategies.
We discussed current practices which include Self Care Clubs, AVID lessons, Mental Health Day, an SEL Team and Counselor/Social Worker supports.Rodriguez: We have pushed out many SEL lessons during AVID. We have discussed many of our concerns, options, updates with district level liaison from HISD district-level reps. We want to increase the training options for staff. We are looking to add teachers to additional trainings oriented toward SEL. We have four members on our SEL team: Rodriguez, Varela, G. Marquina, Brown. C. Marquina mentions that AVID prepares students for college, teaches them soft skills, and provides opportunities for us to implement some SEL offerings. C. Marquina mentions that we need to incorporate time into the schedule for students to have an opportunity to work on their academics and core subject intervention. Dr. Pauloski mentions that it could be viewed as punishment if students must come early or stay late. Students are not really taking advantage of down time during the day. The tutorial schedule is not always compatible with their home life situations. We are putting a burden on our intervention students because we don’t have in-school time for that type of intervention. Square mentions that in the past, sh has pulled students out of elective courses. Students choose electives, lunch, self-care clubs, etc. and it’s or SEL purposes and she doesn’t want to rob them of those benefits. English can start implementing intervention opportunities during AVID time.
Staffing update
Square is sad to report that Nurse Jimoh has accepted another position outside of education. She will be resigning in December and will not be returning after winter break. If we don’t have a quality applicant to replace her, Square wants to know if we should close position and wait for a quality candidate next year during hiring season. If we pursue that option, we will need to develop an alternative plan to fill her duties. There is a nearby middle school and two high schools that are close enough to seek services.Designation Application
Principal Square reviews the blueprint benchmarks relevant to our application for an early college designation. The application requires us to submit outcome-based measures and they review our school products website (houstonisd.org/eastproducts). Square reviews benchmarks and what each of them entail. We have incorporated the outcome-based measures into the School Improvement Plan (SIP). At-risk data is one of the measures we are most concerned about. Data from most recent report can be found in the last SDMC’s meeting minutes. Click here to view our designation data. Waivers
Committee voted unanimously to continue using the start/dismissal time waiver allowing EECHS to start school at 7:50am and end at 3:30pm.The purpose of this waiver is to request alternate Start/Dismissal times for East Early College High School. Our bell schedule is required to align with Institute of Higher Education (IHE partner), Houston Community College so our students may take advantage of college level courses during each class period. As an Early College High School it is imperative that our school hours align with the times that Houston Community College Classes are offered at the Southeast Campus - Felix Fraga location so that our students can take courses that count both toward their Associate Degree and their High School Diploma. East ECHS will begin at 7:50 and end at 3:30 each day. Metric for success will be percentage of students taking dual credit and college coursework and decrease in number of students taking courses at other HCC campus.
SIP CAN (comprehensive needs assessment) Review (page 4-7)
Square will publish document online for us to review blueprint in the minutes. We can email feedback and it will be added. We will revise SIP in February. It’s a living document, so we can edit and update the goals throughout the year. By the end of the school year, it should serve as a good model for next year.Pre-Service Priorities
