Lanier MS is a Vanguard Magnet campus.  We serve students who have been identified as potentially gifted or talented in intellectual ability, creativity, or leadership. Students at Lanier MS receive G/T instruction via the cluster model, which means G/T-identified students at Lanier are grouped homogeneously in the four core areas (math, science, English language arts, and social studies) and receive instruction with other gifted students.  These students study interdisciplinary units that emphasize higher-level thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.  The extensive use of experiential methods of learning and investigative processes in research and problem-solving, allows the student to develop and refine higher-level thinking skills. The teacher serves as a manager of learning, furnishing a positive environment and guidance, thus encouraging students to share in the responsibility for their growth and development.   Approximately 70% of Lanier students are identified as gifted and talented and participate in our Vanguard program.

Our Vanguard Magnet program allows families who do not reside in our attendance zone to apply for a seat at Lanier.  Non-zoned families must submit a magnet application via the HISD School Choice Salesforce platform during Phase 1 or Phase 2 of the application process. Because we receive more applications than seats available, a computer-generated lottery is run by the HISD Office of School Choice for our campus. Lottery selection is random, all qualified students have an equal opportunity to be selected. Qualified for Lanier MS means students are GT-identified by HISD.

    • If your child was identified as GT by HISD, but you left the district, email the qualified HISD GT matrix to jgarza8@houstonisd.org. Documentation should only be emailed once you have applied.
    • If your child was identified as GT by another district or state, please email all GT documentation including a qualified matrix, test scores, and letter of acceptance to jgarza8@houstonisd.org. The District GT committee will evaluate your child’s GT status with HISD. Documentation should only be emailed once you have applied.

GT testing for 24-25 Vanguard Magnet applicants has concluded. If your child is not already GT-identified, he/she is not qualified for Lanier’s magnet program.

Because we have an extensive waitlist from phase 1 applications, all phase 2 qualified applications will be placed at the end of the waitlist in the order received.

Lanier Middle School will only be accepting 6th-grade magnet applications for the 24-25 school year. Due to the high volume of magnet applications we receive, Lanier does not accept any other transfers, including IB transfers.
