HISD already offers free breakfast to all students. This push to expand the free lunch program is just the latest step to ensure students don’t go hungry. Our main goal is to ensure students eat healthy meals so they can stay focused on learning throughout the school day.
While this program has been piloted in only a few states since 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has expanded it to all states since July 1, 2014, for any schools that meet the eligibility requirements.
HISD has been working with the state to ensure as many students as possible benefit. The 191 campuses identified to participate in the program during this school year were selected based on a formula that includes a variety of economic data.
CEP, a federal program, does not require the collection of free/reduced applications. However, HISD is asking that families complete the school meal application so the district receives funding that requires this economic information. It is imperative that we continue to collect this information in order to keep compensatory funding in place. Please look for the school meal application in the packets sent home with students during the first week of school.
*Please note that there will still be a charge for any food not part of the reimbursable meals, such as a la carte and snack items.
