Advocacy Lesson (4 Day Plan)

Advocacy Focus, East Early College High School 

Date -Monday-Thursday – May 20-23 

Essential Question: What or who positively impacted me the most this academic year?  

Activity -(Writing/Discourse/Reading) 

Task 1: Reflection on this Year  

  1. Make sure students are sitting in a round circle- or as close as possible where everyone can see each other.  
  2. Then either the student leader or the advocacy teacher will present a question- and allow 3-5 students- different students each question- to respond.  

Questions:  

  1. What is something you did this school year that you think you will remember for the rest of your life? 
  2. What is something you accomplished this year that you are proud of? 
  3. What was the nicest thing someone in school did for you this year? 
  4. What was the nicest thing you did for someone at school this year?  
  5. What was the most challenging part of this year?/What was the most rewarding part of this year?  
  6. What are the three most important things you learned this year? 
  7. What person at our school has made the biggest impact on your life this year? Why? 

 

Task 2/Task 3   Thank You – Letters!  

  1. Students will write an appreciation letter to three people who have helped them throughout the year – teaching aids, parent volunteers, office staff, teachers, administrators, counselors, or even a classmate, etc.   
  2. This letter should be directed to the faculty, staff member, or classmate- have students decorate the letters (if possible).  
  3. The advocacy teacher should collect the letters (for faculty/staff) and distribute them to each person. OR you can ask the students to personally deliver the letters. Students should personally deliver letters to classmates.  

*This could take up two days* 

Task 4: Next School Year 

  1. Make sure students are sitting in a round circle- or as close as possible where everyone can see each other.

Questions:  

  1. What goals have you set for the next school year?  
  2. How do you want to improve your relationship with classmates, teachers next school year?  
  3. What course are you excited to take the next school year?  
  4. What club or organization do you want to participate in?  
  5. How will the next school year be better than this year?
