    Amanda Larsen—Carnegie Vanguard High School (tie)

     

    Amanda Larsen is a member of the National Honor Society and the Gay Straight Alliance. She has also been active on the girls’ soccer team and with the Junior Statesmen of America. She lists her favorite subject as biology, which she will study at Wesleyan University this fall.

     

    Larsen has been recognized as a National Merit Finalist. She attended Herod Elementary and T. H. Rogers Middle schools before coming to Carnegie Vanguard. In her spare time, Larsen enjoys printmaking, playing soccer, and tutoring other students.

    Timothy Messen—Carnegie Vanguard High School (tie)

     

    Timothy Messen (né Mesyanzhinov), who enjoys cooking, long-distance running, and reading Russian literature, is a graduate of Askew and Shadowbriar elementary schools and T. H. Rogers Middle School. He is active on his school’s cross-county team and campus newspaper. He is also a member of the Debate Club and he serves as vice president of the National Honor Society. He is the recipient of a scholarship from the Houston Urban Debate League.

     

    Messen’s favorite class is chemistry, and he intends to pursue a degree in biochemistry, linguistics, and/or French at Dartmouth College. He has been recognized for his performance in debate, Greek, and French language competitions. He also beat all other runners in his age group at this year’s Chevron Houston Marathon.
