Valedictorians Maria Rodriguez, left, and Uriel Iglesias.
Each spring, HISD honors the valedictorian and salutatorian at each of its high schools with a formal celebration of their outstanding academic achievements.
In 2017, the district recognized the top scholars at the annual Scholars Banquet on April 11 at the Westin Oaks Gallery. The valedictorian is a student who has earned the highest grade point average in his or her graduating class, and the salutatorian has the second highest grade point average.
This year, HISD has singled out two students for special recognition. The first is Northside High School valedictorian Maria Rodriguez, who will be attending Brown University to become a medical researcher or a physician. Rodriguez has been an active member of EMERGE, where she served as ambassador for the program. For more information, see her listing below. The second student the district would like to highlight is Sam Houston MSTC valedictorian Uriel Iglesias, who plans to attend the University of Texas and major in bilingual education. Iglesias is the recipient of a Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship and would like to become a teacher. He has been active in the National Honor Society, the STEM program at his school, and has done many hours of community service. To see photos and read the biographies of each valedictorian and salutatorian, please click on the links below.
