Karen Banda
Karen Banda—Furr High School
Karen Banda lists Advanced Placement calculus as her favorite subject. She has been active in GeoFORCE, the EMERGE program, and her school’s civility program. Banda is also a member of the choir, the Principal’s Advisory Committee, and the Principal’s Court. A product of HISD, she attended Whittier Elementary and Holland Middle schools before graduating from Furr.
In her spare time, Banda enjoys reading, singing, and helping others. She has been recognized for her performance in writing, singing, public speaking, and environmental activism. Banda plans to pursue a degree in economics from Smith College, but she has also been offered scholarships from Clark University, St. Lawrence University, and Austin College.
Helaine EspinozaHelaine Espinoza—Furr High School
Helaine Espinoza, who lists her favorite subjects as government, economics, and English, enjoys reading different genres of books and exploring new methods of writing in her spare time. She attended Whittier Elementary and Holland Middle schools before coming to Furr.
Espinoza is an Honor Roll student who has been recognized with awards for civility, citizenship, and public speaking. She is active on her school’s Principal Advisory Committee, Toxic Tar Project, and Civility Program. Espinoza plans to pursue a degree in political science at either the University of Houston or Texas A&M University.
