Our Mission and Commitment

  • Houston ISD recognizes that, to equitably educate the whole-child, special attention must be given to underserved female students. Using a cohort model, the Resilient Outstanding Sisters Exemplifying Success (ROSES) Project is designed to mentor underserved female students at participating schools to build-out their post-secondary educational and career goals through academic, social-emotional, and workforce interventions.

ROSES is committed to connecting female students from historically underserved demographics with community resources and mentorship opportunities to empower them with the knowledge, confidence,  and necessary skills to enter the college and/or career of their choice upon graduation from Houston ISD.

She began her career as a member of the College Advising Corp at Nimitz High School in Aldine Independent School District. She joined HISD's College Readiness team in 2015 as a College Readiness Advisor and served as a College Readiness Manager before her current role as Senior Manager of the ROSES Project.  In all these roles, she oversaw the implementation of high-quality initiatives, programming, and systems that support student success and postsecondary enrollment. Supporting underrepresented youth is a major focal point of her career because she believes that every student can achieve the extraordinary when they are provided quality education and mentorship. She also finds it essential to give back and bring awareness to social issues, especially in Latin American countries like her homeland Colombia. She volunteers her time as a board member of The Courage To Bee, Inc. An organization dedicated to serving at-risk youth in impoverished Latin American countries.

She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. As an adult probation officer, she reduced recidivism rates, provided resources and served as a liaison between the courts and offenders. Demetres began her career in education in 2016. She taught various subjects such as Dual Credit Business Management, Principals of Law and Introduction to Criminal Justice. Shortly after, she was promoted to an At-Risk Program Administrator. In this role, Demetres worked closely with schools, students, parents, administrators and the community to create and coordinate educational programs, increase attendance and graduation percentages, decrease drop out rates and increase student achievement. Demetres is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she believes in Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service.
