  • The HISD Board of Education adopted a tax rate of $0.8683 per $100 of taxable value for tax year 2023 during its regular monthly meeting on September 14, 2023.

    This rate includes a “maintenance and operations” component of $0.7016 and a “debt-service” component of $0.1667.

    The 2023 HISD tax rate of $0.8683 is lower than last year's rate.

    Taxes may increase on a home if the appraisal district certified value of the home increased this year over last year.

    Houston Independent School District taxes are collected by the Harris County Tax Office (HCTO).

    All HISD tax payments should be remitted to the Harris County Tax Office (HCTO), and all inquiries related to taxpayer accounts should be directed to the HCTO at 713-274-8000. The main address of the Harris County Tax Office is 1001 Preston, Houston, Texas, 77002.

    If you have received an over 65 tax ceiling limitation certificate from the Harris County Appraisal District, please forward original certificate to the Harris County Tax Office or contact HCTO at 713-274-8000 and ask for the over 65 department.

    Basic information about HISD taxes:

    • Homestead tax exemption: $100,000 plus 20 percent of appraised value
    • Additional exemption of $15,000 for homeowners age 65 and older, or disabled
    • There are additional exemptions for disabled veterans. Contact the Harris County Appraisal District at 713-957-7800 for more information.
    • The school district taxable value displayed above reflects the provisional requirements of SB2, The Property Tax Relief Act, to increase the residence homestead exemption to $100,000. This increase is contingent on voter approval at an election to be held in November 2023. If that change is not approved by the voters, the exemption amount will revert to $40,000 and a supplemental bill may be mailed to you.
