Van Tran—DeBakey High School for Health Professions
Van TranVan Tran plans to pursue a degree in English or psychology from Stanford University, Dartmouth College, or Williams College. She is the recipient of a Stephen H. Tyng Scholarship and a Mary Gibbs Jones Scholarship from the Houston Endowment. She has served as president of the National Spanish Honor Society and captain of the Name That Book Club. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the BETA Club (a service organization), and Health Occupations Students of America.
Tran attended a primary school in Cy-Fair ISD and HISD's Revere Middle School before coming to DeBakey. She is the recipient of a Gold Key Award in writing from Scholastic, and she has been named a National Merit Finalist and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. Tran's favorite subject is English literature, and in her spare time she enjoys writing flash fiction, listening to Japanese pop music, and playing puzzle games.
Xing Kai LiXing Kai Li—DeBakey High School for Health Professions
Xing Kai Li plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. He serves as the historian of the National Honor Society and the Chinese Club, and president of the Dance Club. He is also active in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and academic decathlon competitions. Li attended an elementary school in Canada and Pershing Middle School before coming to DeBakey.
Li has been named a National Merit Scholar and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. He is the recipient of his school's Principal's Award and he has been recognized for his performance in physics, economics, and HOSA competitions. Li lists his favorite subject as calculus, and his hobbies include dancing, playing basketball, and practicing the piano.
