    Juana Martinez plans to attend the University of St. Thomas, where she will major in international studies. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Chinese Language and Culture Club. She is also active in University Interscholastic League competitions. Martinez lists her favorite subject as mathematics, and in her free time, she enjoys reading, studying other cultures, and spending time with family and friends.

    Martinez attended Scott Elementary and The Rice School before coming to HAIS. She won a Mickey Leland Kibbutzim Internship to travel to Israel as a junior, and she has been recognized for her exemplary academic performance in geography, chemistry, writing, math, science, and several other subjects. She is also the recipient of a Presidential Excellence Merit Scholarship, a Simmons Foundation/Redstone Scholarship, and a Metropolitan Scholarship.

    Benjamin Brooks

    Benjamin Brooks—Houston Academy for International Studies

    Benjamin Brooks plans to pursue a degree in international relations from Georgetown University. He has been recognized for his performance in writing and debate competitions and he has traveled abroad through both the American Political Science Association and the American Youth Leadership Program. Brooks is the recipient of scholarships from the Linda Lorelle Foundation and Conoco-Phillips. He lists his favorite subject as history.

    A product of Turner Elementary and Ryan Middle Schools, Brooks has been active in Model United Nations activities and University Interscholastic League competitions. A member of the National Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa, and the National Society for Collegiate Students, Brooks has also served as the volunteer director for the Mayor's Youth Council and captain of the debate team. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, lifting weights, and spending time with friends.
