Daniel Delatorre
Daniel Delatorre—Empowerment College Preparatory Academy
Daniel Delatorre attended Almeda Elementary and Grady Middle schools before graduating from Empowerment. His favorite subjects are biology and literature, and he lists his hobbies as playing baseball, swimming, and collecting sneakers. Delatorre has received awards for outstanding performance in algebra, world history, chemistry, and English, as well as commended performance in mentoring. He also won his school’s Principal’s Choice award and was named “Most Likely to Be Your Employer” twice.
Delatorre has received scholarship offers from Baylor University and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, but he plans to pursue a pre-medicine degree in biochemistry from the University of Texas. He has been active on the debate team, the varsity baseball team (while at Sterling HS), and in the Math Club. Delatorre has also served as a student ambassador, a mentor to elementary students, and a volunteer with UNICEF. He has logged more than 125 hours of service to date.Jonathon Allen—Empowerment College Preparatory Academy (tie)
Akilah Edwards & Jonathon AllenJonathon Allen, who enjoys reading, knitting, and making tie-dyed shirts, attended Frost Elementary and Hartman Middle schools. He lists his favorite subject as biology, and he plans to study pharmaceutical science at Texas Tech University.
Allen has been named Best Chemistry Student and Student of the Month. He has also been recognized for maintaining a perfect attendance record. Allen served as president of his school’s Student Council, and he is active in the Kappa League (a service organization).
Akilah Edwards—Empowerment College Preparatory Academy (tie)
Akilah Edwards, whose favorite subject is mathematics, is a member of the Student Government, the Poetry Club, and the school band. She is also active on the debate and softball teams, and she serves as captain of the dance team. A product of HISD, Edwards attended Grimes Elementary and Attucks Middle schools before coming to Empowerment.
Edwards plans to pursue a degree in business from the University of St. Thomas using the Basilian Distinguished Scholarship she received. She has been named Best Algebra Student, Top Poet, and Top Novice Speaker. In her spare time, Edwards enjoys playing softball and creating new designs from old clothes.
