    Brenda Cabrera—Houston Academy for International Studies

     

    Brenda Cabrera, who enjoys reading, listening to music, and watching television, attended Stevens Elementary and Black Middle schools before graduating from HAIS. Her favorite subject is mathematics, which she plans use in her study of accounting this fall at the University of Houston Downtown.

     

    Cabrera is a member of her school’s National Honor Society and Hispanic Youth Organization. She is also active in University Interscholastic League activities, and she has earned recognition for her performance in math, English, chemistry, and science. Cabrera is the recipient of a Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship and an Opportunity Scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

    José Cantu Rangel—Houston Academy for International Studies

     

    José Cantu Rangel plans to attend Rice University this fall, where he will study mechanical engineering or international relations. A product of HISD, he attended Scroggins Elementary and Hamilton Middle schools before graduating from HAIS. Rangel has received scholarship offers from Rice University and the United States Air Force (ROTC).

     

    Rangel is active in University Interscholastic League, Model United Nations, and Houston Area Urban League policy debate activities. He is also a member of the Basketball Club and the Chinese dragon boat team. Rangel has been named an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, the Top AP Chemistry Student, and HAUL’s David Seikel Memorial Tournament Champion. In his free time, Rangel enjoys reading, engaging in debates, and playing video games.
