No matter their subject, teachers urged to join HISD summer writing program

All HISD teachers, regardless of what subject area they teach, are encouraged to sign up for the second annual HISD Summer Writing Institute. HISD, in partnership with Abydos Literacy Learning, will be offering five sessions of the institute, which provides teachers with opportunities to improve their own craft of writing and learn strategies to more effectively teach writing to their students.

“I highly recommended that every teacher attend this training,” said Thomas Middle School teacher LaKia Jackson, who attended the institute last summer. “It totally transformed how I think about writing and how I think about teaching.”

During the 12-day, 90-hour institute, participants will further build their knowledge and pedagogy for writing and develop strategies to encourage better writing from their students. Upon completion of the 90 hours and a commitment to attend two follow-up mini-conferences, participants will earn a $1,500 stipend.

“I will never be the same teacher thanks to Abydos,” said Kennedy Elementary teacher Frances Martinez. “Anybody can take the Abydos training and learn more about the process of writing and get a more holistic approach to helping their students become better writers.”

Spaces for the institute are limited and are on a first come, first serve basis. Those interested in applying can click here. Applications are due Friday, May 2.

The June sessions begin June 9 and continue through June 26 with observance of the four-day work week. Sessions will occur simultaneously at Hartman Middle School and Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center.

July sessions will run July 14-31 with observance of the four-day work week. Sessions will occur simultaneously at Hamilton Middle School, Fleming Middle School, and Woodson Leadership Academy.
