"Stepping" has been a part of African American culture since roughly the mid-1900s, but that art form allowed a group of current students from HISD’s Patterson Elementary School to "step" into the spotlight at the 2012 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Patterson's step team was one of only 30 student groups from Houston-area campuses to be picked to perform at the annual event, which comes to the Bayou City early each year.
The award-winning group was one of the featured entertainers during the rodeo's March 2 observance of Black Heritage Day.
