HISD Board of Education Trustee Lawrence Marshall joined alumni, students and community volunteers at the official groundbreaking for the expansion and renovation of Evan E. Worthing High School on Wednesday, March 21.
The project, made possible by the $805 million bond referendum approved by voters in 2007, includes a new two-story classroom addition, safety and security upgrades, technology improvements, and roof repairs, in addition to repairs of the athletic track. The expanded and renovated campus will feature a new library, science labs, and commons area as well.
At the groundbreaking, Marshall recognized State Representatives Alma Allen and Borris L. Miles for their commitment to the Worthing school community.
"I want to thank Alma and Borris for serving as an inspiration to the rest of us. They have been totally committed to the success of students at Worthing," Marshall said.
Allen presented a flag flown at the Texas state capitol, and a special proclamation commemorating the Worthing High School groundbreaking.
"It is a beautiful morning for a brand new start," Allen said. "I see a number of my former elementary students in the audience today, and it is gratifying to see this come full circle."
Licia Green Ellis, wife of state Sen. Rodney Ellis, presented a $10,000 donation to Worthing Principal Tod Nix for the Worthing Community Learning Center, which will serve students in the Worthing feeder pattern and other community groups in the Sunnyside area.
"Every time Rodney is on the Senate floor, he is representing Worthing High School," Licia Green Ellis said. "It all started here, where he graduated in 1972, and served as president of the student council."
Other special guests included Constable May Walker, Worthing PTO President Denise Hamilton, Commissioner El Franco Lee, Outreach Liaison of U.S. Congressman Al Green, Bessie Swindle, and former Worthing Principal Willie Gentry. Gentry presented a $1,000 donation on behalf of the Gentry family in support of the planned Worthing Community Learning Center.
Principal Nix thanked the Sunnyside community for its support, stating that the planned expansion would revitalize not only the school, but its surrounding neighborhood.
"This corner of Reed Road and Scott Street won’t look like it does today," Nix said. "Evan E. Worthing is on a path to reclaiming our success."
