National Merit Corp. Names College-Sponsored Scholarship Winners
May 29, 2012

Three students from different HISD schools were named winners on May 23 in the third round of National Merit Scholarships for 2012.
Officials from each sponsor college selected their recipients from finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. The scholarships will provide $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the sponsoring facility.
Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
Below is a list of round-three winners, their areas of study, and the institutions financing their awards:
- Ankeet Mutha: Bellaire HS, engineering, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering
- Adriana Pantazis: DeBakey HS, veterinary medicine, Texas A&M University
- Yihui Yang: Carnegie HS, medicine, University of Southern California
This year, 197 higher education institutions are underwriting awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 117 private and 80 public institutions located in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
Additional recipients of college-sponsored awards will be announced in the final round on July 9.
