Garden Oaks Wins ‘Solar for Good’ award

Congratulations to Garden Oaks Elementary school for recently being named one of the winners of Green Mountain Energy’s Vote Solar for Good Facebook challenge.  Garden Oaks Elementary competed with two other organizations in Texas in the online competition.  Now the school will use the $1,500 grant to purchase solar lights for its walkways.  The lights will also be used to conduct experiments while monitoring energy savings.

Garden Oaks environmental science teacher Ashley McAffee is excited the grant will be used to purchase new solar equipment.  “The students are working very hard learning about ways to conserve energy at home,” said McAffee.  “Now they will be able to observe energy conservation on our own campus.”

 “I am happy that we won this solar equipment,” said 4^th grade student Christopher Knauth. “We should besides making path lights use it to conserve energy.  This combined with the fact that we are buying a wind turbine should tremendously lower our energy consumption.”

The Human Impacts Institute and the non-profit food bank and hunger relief organization Philabundance received the most votes in their respective states and will also receive the $1,500 solar donation from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club.
