Three Campuses Earn Spots on the New Best High Schools List
Carnegie, DeBakey, and Challenge Early College make Newsweek’s cut in 2011
June 21, 2011
Three HISD’s high schools earned a place on the 2011 Newsweek Best High Schools list. Out of 1,100 high schools reviewed, Newsweek chose only 500 nationwide. HISD’s Carnegie Vanguard High School placed at number 11; DeBakey High School for Health Professions came in at number 30 and Challenge Early College High School placed at number 327.
This year’s list is brand new. In years past, the list was compiled by the Washington Post and published in Newsweek. This year, that list moved to the Washington Post and Newsweek changed its criteria to reflect six components: graduation rate (25%), college matriculation rate (25%), and Advanced Placement tests taken per graduate (25%), plus average SAT/ACT scores (10%), average AP/International Baccalaureate scores (10%), and AP courses offered per graduate (5%).
The Washington Post list, now called the High School Challenge, was released last month. It is compiled by taking the total number of AP tests, International Baccalaureate tests, and Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school and dividing by the number of graduating seniors. A total of 25 HISD schools made that list, with three in the Top 100.
