Second-Graders Get a Jump-Start on Summer Reading with Free Books
Jack and Jill of America and HISD trustee distribute 900 books on the last day of school
June 03, 2011
Second-graders at a dozen HISD elementary schools received a special gift on the last day of school this year; the gift of learning. Thanks to the generosity of the South Central Region Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. (JJAI) and HISD Board of Education President Paula Harris, 900 students went home with a brand new book.
Representatives of JJAI joined Harris at MacGregor Elementary School to distribute some of the books personally on June 3.
“As we begin summer vacation, there is no more important foundation for the next school year than for our students to read,” said Harris. “Research shows that students tend to lose some of the knowledge they’ve gained during the summer break, unless they are avid readers.”
