HISD Foundation and United Way Help Pay for School Uniforms

Incoming sixth- and ninth-graders at college prep academies to benefit from donation

July 19, 2011

The HISD Foundation has partnered with the United Way of Greater Houston to help purchase uniforms for the incoming classes of sixth- and ninth-grade students at the new Young Women’s and Young Men’s College Preparatory Academies.

The college-success culture at these academies requires that the students wear a uniform to class every day. However, most of the students who have enrolled come from low-income families that are unable to pay for uniforms.

“Developing children and youth to their full potential is one of our key focus areas,” said Anna Babin, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston, “and this investment is one of the ways we can support the academic success of our children.”

The United Way contributed $20,000 and the HISD Foundation earmarked $25,000 from its 2011 Golf Tournament proceeds to pay for the uniforms.
