Support comes from a local business, a nonprofit organization, and a state grant

July 05, 2011

The Houston Independent School District received more than a million dollars from various sources in June in support of its Apollo 20 school turnaround program.

The funds, which came from the Cullen Foundation ($500K; pdf), El Paso Corporation ($100K; pdf), and a Title I grant from the Texas Education Agency ($450K; pdf), were accepted less than three months after exciting statistics were released about an increase in Apollo 20 students' matriculation rates; (also see related story, “Early Report Points to Gains…” from January 2011).

The Title I grant will also be used to support transformation efforts at HISD’s Contemporary Learning Center.

The current total of private donations to the Apollo 20 program now stands at $12,520,000.
