HISD Foundation to Host Inaugural “Cool to Be Smart” Celebration August 14
Eligible recent graduates could win a free car, laptop computer, or college scholarship
August 03, 2011
On the afternoon of August 14, some lucky members of HISD’s Class of 2011 will be taking home a free car, laptop computer, or college scholarship.
The HISD Foundation is hosting its inaugural Cool to Be Smart celebration from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. that day at the Delmar Fieldhouse (2020 Mangum), and recent graduates who enrolled in five or more Advanced Placement (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses—and took the corresponding exams—are eligible to win prizes in a random drawing. Texas Direct Auto is donating the car for the grand prize.
“One of our strategies to help us become the best school district in America is to increase the rigor in our schools,” said HISD Superintendent of Schools Terry B. Grier. “Cool to Be Smart recognizes students who have stepped up to the plate and taken these advanced courses to better prepare themselves for college.”

More than 950 new alumni will be notified by mail that they qualify for the drawing and invited to the celebration, but they must be present to win. Former students can also call the HISD High Schools Office at 713-556-6000 to see if they are eligible.
