The children at Roberts Elementary School are from 38 different countries, and the campus recently held an International Festival to celebrate the heritage and culture of the many nations represented at the school. “This year’s theme (was) artisans of the world,” Principal Rita Graves explained. “We are learning about different artisans and crafts of the people of the world.”
Students received a “passport” and presented it at different booths showcasing the various countries and their artwork, such as pottery, sculpture, and traditional masks. The festival also included games, international cuisine, and a number of performances. “We started with our World Percussion Ensemble,” Graves said. “We have children with other children from their country celebrating and sharing the dance of their culture. We have dances from about 15 different countries.”
Parents helped organize the event, which is an annual tradition now in its twelfth year. It is designed to celebrate the students’ different cultures and supplement their classroom lessons. “We are an International Baccalaureate school, and that is part of our core curriculum, learning about other places, recognizing that while we are all different, we are also the same,” Graves said.
