October 10, 2011

HISD Board of Education members, Superintendent of Schools Terry B. Grier, and other HISD educators are scheduled to participate in the Parents for Public Schools National Leadership Conference in Houston. The three-day event includes presentations and panel discussions about a number of key education issues, including, bridging the academic gap, quality teaching, meeting the needs of children with special needs, and teaching children to be good digital citizens. The conference will also feature a discussion about the state’s new testing program, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR.) “We will make every attempt to give parents information so they can be true partners in education,” Parents for Public Schools of Houston President Frances Robinson-Hunt explains.

Former U.S. Secretary of Education and HISD Superintendent Rod Paige will deliver a keynote address on Friday, October 14. Other speakers include Dennis Bega, Deputy Director of Regional Operations/Office of Communications and Outreach with the U.S. Department of Education; Harvard University Professor Ronald Ferguson, noted “Achievement Gap” expert; and Sonia Manzano, a children’s book author who played “Maria” on Sesame Street.

The event kicks off on Friday, October 14, at the Marriott West Loop in Houston. Dr. Grier will deliver welcoming remarks. HISD Principal Jaime Castañeda of Davis High School and HISD teacher Sheryl Hullaby of Briarmeadow Charter School are also expected to serve on panel discussions at the conference.
