Bush ES, Key MS, Bellaire HS, and East Early College HS honored for boosting participation rates

HISD celebrated the conclusion of its 2011 summer reading program with a special ceremony held at Bush Elementary School on September 30.
Bush—which saw the greatest increase in student participation this year at the elementary level—was one of four schools to be recognized for its efforts in the fourth annual Millionaire Club, a program designed to motivate every student to read at least five books over the summer.
Library Services Specialist Amy Sutton attributed Bush’s boost in participation to Principal Theresa Rose and Librarian Melinda Zeagler. Before classes ended in May, Rose challenged every student to read more books than she did over the annual break (22)—and 73 (or more than 10 percent) rose to the challenge—while Zeagler created “book trees” in the library to track students’ progress, adding one “leaf” per book read.
At the recent celebration, Librarian Melinda Zeagler transformed herself into the superhero, “Wonder Reader,” complete with red cape, boots, wrist guards, and a headband, to announce the campus’ top readers at each grade level.
Afterward, the hundreds of Bush students who participated in the program enjoyed a “Reading Rocks” presentation given by the Houston Rockets’ mascot, Clutch, sponsored by local supporter Jeremy Radcliffe.
The other three schools recognized this year were Key Middle School, which had the most participation at the middle school level; East Early College High School, which had the most participation at both the high school level and overall; and Bellaire High School, which saw the largest jump in the number of students participating.
