HISD Salutes Alumni Lawmakers during Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and students at schools all over HISD are completing projects, drafting reports, and participating in activities designed to educate both themselves and their peers about the many valuable contributions of African Americans to society.

The theme for this year’s observance is district alumni and employees who went on to become state legislators, and more than a dozen are highlighted on the district’s official poster, including:

  •  the late Mickey Leland, who graduated from Wheatley High School;
  • Representative Senfronia Thompson, an alumna of Washington High School;
  • Representative Alma Allen, who once served as the principal of HISD’s Peck, Windsor Village, and Turner elementary schools.

  HISD’s Board of Education recognized some of these distinguished lawmakers at its recent meeting on Feb. 14, 2013.
