OECD Study on Social and Emotional Skills

  • Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the only U.S. district selected to participate in an international study on social and emotional skills. The study is led by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in partnership with the Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC) at Rice University. The study will measure a set of social and emotional skills, based on the Big Five personality traits, plus compound skills, including:

    The data gathered from this survey will be used to (i) help identify factors that support the development of social and emotional skills; and (ii) consider what these skills look like in an international context. This study has a direct connection to HISD’s vision for social and emotional learning to coordinate the implementation and growth of culturally-responsive and emotionally safe learning environments.

    In HISD, the study will have 2 phases:

    • Field Study: October - November 2018
    • Main Study: October 1 - November 22, 2019 

     

    In fall 2018, approximately one thousand, three hundred (1,300) HISD students across thirty-two (32) schools were randomly selected to participate in the field study. In fall 2019, approximately six thousand (6,000) randomly selected HISD students across 119 schools will participate in the main study. For every student who participates, a parent, teacher, and principal will also complete a questionnaire. Incentives for survey completion will be offered to all participants.
