    Honeybees are amazing insects and very important for our world. There are three kinds of bees in a bee family: the queen, worker bees, and drones. Each one has a special job. 

    1. Queen Bee: There is only one queen in the whole hive. Her job is to lay eggs. 

    1. Worker Bees: These are all girls. They do everything! They clean, build the hive, take care of baby bees, feed the queen, guard the hive, keep it cool or warm, and collect food from flowers. 

    1. Drone Bees: These are the boys. Their job is to leave the hive and find a queen from another hive to mate with. 

          

     Bees are super important for growing food. They help move pollen from one plant to another, which helps fruits and vegetables grow. This is called pollination.  About one-third of our food needs bees to help it grow. Other animals like hummingbirds, butterflies, and bats help too. 

    When bees visit flowers, they collect sweet nectar to eat and make honey. Pollen, a powder from flowers, sticks to their bodies and legs. As they fly from flower to flower, they move the pollen around. Bees also bring pollen back to the hive to feed the queen and baby bees. 

     

    A bee family can have tens of thousands of bees. Each bee can visit up to 2,000 flowers in one day! The queen can lay about 2,000 eggs every day. Bees live for about six weeks in the summer and up to five months in the winter. A strong hive can make about 40 pounds of honey each year, which they eat during the winter.

    At Mykawa Farm’s bee yard, there are three kinds of homes for the bees: 

    1. Top Bar Hive: This is a long box on legs. Inside, there are wooden bars where bees build their wax comb. 

    1. Langstroth Hive: This hive is made of stacked boxes with frames inside. Bees build their comb on these frames. 

    1. Apimaye Hive: This is like the Langstroth hive but instead of wood it is made of plastic.  It is easier to manage and keeps bees warmer in winter or cooler in summer. It also has frames inside. 

    In the Langstroth and Apimaye hives, the bottom box is for baby bees to grow, and the top boxes are for storing honey.

    ZONA DE ZUMBIDO

    Las abejas melíferas son insectos increíbles y muy importantes para nuestro mundo. Hay tres tipos de abejas en una familia de abejas: la reina, las abejas obreras y los zánganos. Cada uno tiene un trabajo especial.

    Abeja Reina: Solo hay una reina en toda la colmena. Su trabajo es poner huevos.

    Abejas Obreras: Todas son hembras. ¡Ellas hacen de todo! Limpian, construyen la colmena, cuidan a las crías, alimentan a la reina, vigilan la colmena, la mantienen fresca o cálida, y recolectan comida de las flores.

    Abejas Zángano: Estos son los machos. Su trabajo es salir de la colmena y encontrar una reina de otra colmena para aparearse.

    Las abejas son súper importantes para el cultivo de alimentos. Ayudan a mover el polen de una planta a otra, lo que permite que crezcan frutas y verduras. Esto se llama polinización. Aproximadamente un tercio de nuestros alimentos necesita que las abejas ayuden a que crezcan. Otros animales como los colibríes, mariposas y murciélagos también ayudan.

    Cuando las abejas visitan las flores, recolectan néctar dulce para comer y hacer miel. El polen, un polvo de las flores, se pega a sus cuerpos y patas. Mientras vuelan de flor en flor, mueven el polen. Las abejas también llevan el polen de vuelta a la colmena para alimentar a la reina y a las crías.

    Una familia de abejas puede tener decenas de miles de abejas. Cada abeja puede visitar hasta 2,000 flores en un día. La reina puede poner alrededor de 2,000 huevos cada día. Las abejas viven aproximadamente seis semanas en el verano y hasta cinco meses en el invierno. Una colmena fuerte puede producir alrededor de 40 libras de miel cada año, la cual comen durante el invierno.

    En el apiario de la Granja Mykawa, hay tres tipos de casas para las abejas:

    • Colmena de Barra Superior: Es una caja larga con patas. En su interior, hay barras de madera donde las abejas construyen su panal de cera.

    • Colmena Langstroth: Esta colmena está hecha de cajas apiladas con marcos en su interior. Las abejas construyen su panal en estos marcos.

    • Colmena Apimaye: Esta es similar a la colmena Langstroth, pero en lugar de madera, está hecha de plástico. Es más fácil de manejar y mantiene a las abejas más cálidas en invierno o más frescas en verano. También tiene marcos en su interior.

    En las colmenas Langstroth y Apimaye, la caja inferior es para que las crías crezcan, y las cajas superiores son para almacenar miel.
